Vidura Neethi: A Tamil Translation of the Ancient Wisdom of Vidura

The Qualities of a Fool
Vidura said:
A fool is one who does not know his own limitations and thinks himself to be superior to others.
A fool is one who does not listen to good advice and follows his own whims and fancies.
A fool is one who does not learn from his mistakes and repeats them again and again.
A fool is one who does not respect his elders, teachers, and friends, and insults them with his words and deeds.
A fool is one who does not practice self-control and indulges in sensual pleasures without restraint.
A fool is one who does not perform his duties and obligations and wastes his time and energy in useless pursuits.
A fool is one who does not cultivate virtues and values and harbors vices and faults in his mind.
A fool is one who does not worship God and serve His creation and lives only for his own selfish interests.
These are the eight qualities of a fool that lead him to misery and ruin. A wise person should avoid these qualities and cultivate their opposites.
The Opposites of Foolishness
Vidura said:
A wise person is one who knows his own strengths and weaknesses and strives to improve himself.
A wise person is one who listens to good advice and follows it with discernment.
A wise person is one who learns from his mistakes and avoids them in the future.
A wise person is one who respects his elders, teachers, and friends, and honors them with his words and deeds.
A wise person is one who practices self-control and moderates his sensual pleasures with reason.
A wise person is one who performs his duties and obligations and utilizes his time and energy in useful pursuits.
A wise person is one who cultivates virtues and values and eradicates vices and faults from his mind.
A wise person is one who worships God and serves His creation and lives for the welfare of all beings.
These are the eight qualities of a wise person that lead him to happiness and success. A foolish person should aspire to these qualities and emulate them in his life.
